Useful Tips for Keloid Scar Treatment

Keloids are the most problematic forms of scars, and are usually composed of different types of collagen, depending on its maturity stage. Keloid scar treatment must be started as soon as they are noticed, because they grow rapidly and can go on to disfigure the face or any other body part on which it grows.
Keloid scar treatments are of different types ranging from natural treatments to laser removal, steroid injection, surgeries, and compression etc. Whatever the procedure chosen, utmost care must be taken not to infect the keloids, as this will cause rapid expansion of the scar. This is most important as this can affect natural movement of the skin and cause disfiguring in some cases.
Most scar treatment procedures are expensive and delicate. Surgeries, steroid injection and laser treatments rank high in this regard. Any mistake during these procedures can be costly and also result in infections. It is a known fact that keloids expand in claw-like growths, within short periods, over normal skin. Also, they hurt with needle-like sensation either continually or at odd times.
The choice of keloid scar treatment can either be complete removal of the scar, injection of substances to kill the keloid or laser treatment. Studies have shown that more than half of all keloid removal procedures result in the formation of another keloid while laser treatments have shown greater promise.
Some medical practitioners have noted that no keloid scar treatment procedure is 100% effective, almost like cancers. Recently, some drugs used for cancer treatments have shown promise for keloid treatment. In the light of this, prevention of keloid formation and keloid expansion mechanisms is important for any success to be achieved.
Prevention can be effectively monitored when certain keloid forming tendencies are identified and avoided. This can include:
  • Infected scratchy injuries not well looked after;
  • Piercing on any body part, if not properly managed. Though, not scientifically proven, it is claimed that keloid incidence is greater among younger females than males due to earlobe piercing;
  • Pimple or chicken pox scarring area of the body.
  • These are just a few to aid prevention. As they say, "Prevention is better than cure".
